The MHJ2 humidistat can control an intake or outtake ventilator according to the measured humidity. The humidistat keeps the ventilator at the pre-set minimum speed when the humidity is optimal and smoothly increases it if the humidity rises. 

By setting the hysteresis (1% - 10%RH), you control when the humidifier/dehumidifier turns on/off. For example, if you set the hysteresis to 2% and the ideal humidity to 20%, a humidifier will turn on at 18%.
