Substrates (Growing Media)
Substrates are the specialised materials from which plants grow, also called growing media. You can choose substrates from brands with well-known names such as BioNova, Plagron, Canna, BioBizz, Atami and more. We recommend using substrates and fertilisers made by the same manufacturer.
We generally differentiate these types of growing media:
- Soil substrates are different types of soil and peat mixes. It's the most common type of substrate.
- Coco substrates are similar to soil substrates, but they sustain fewer bacteria. Made of crushed coconut coir, they retain high amounts of water while staying airy.
- Clay pebbles (hydroton) are a very clean and porous growing media used mainly in hydroponic systems.
- Perlite is a white granular mineral, great for stimulating root growth. It has a wide variety of uses, a lot of them in hydroponics.
