Essentials pH adjusters work simply by changing the pH of the solution. If the current pH is at a level of 5 (slightly acidic), an alkaline solution (pH INCREASE) is added to raise it to the desired level.

Checking and adjusting the pH in a hydroponic system is a simple matter. The Essentials pH test kit is the least expensive way for the amateur grower to check pH. These test kits work by placing a small amount of nutrient solution in a container, adding a few drops of test solution and mixing them together. The colour of the resulting liquid in the container is then compared with the colour scale. The most accurate way to check the pH is to use a professional digital pH Essentials meter or a Trident Tri-meter. The electrode simply needs to be immersed in the nutrient solution for a few moments and the pH value is displayed on the LCD.

The Essentials pH meters are very accurate (if properly calibrated) and fast. Like all laboratory measuring instruments, they must be properly cared for. All pH meters are temperature sensitive. The advantage of the pH Essentials meter is that it contains an automatic temperature compensation (ATC) that adjusts the temperature accordingly.
The calibration should be checked weekly (and adjusted if necessary). For hydroponics, this is often done at pH 7 using Essentials Buffer 7 and then at pH 4 using Essentials Buffer 4. This gives two calibration points on either side of the normal working pH of 5.5 to pH 6.2.

We recommend that you change your meter every two years to ensure accuracy. To ensure the longest life of the meter, the electrode should be kept in water. The end of the electrode should never dry out, and as pH meters are very sensitive to extremes of temperature and humidity, they should always be stored in a cool dry place.
